Hey Bill,

I really like your honesty and candor. Running a studio business is difficult, but I appreciate all the insight you have from musical tastes to equipment. Yeah...everything. Would love to see your place one day.

Peace,
Kevin

Thanks, Nick! I'll address mixing thoroughly soon. (I know I'm royally slow at updating this site but there's a great reason and I tell ya soon). Dr. Dog often speeds up the tape at the end when we're mixing. If you record to tape, then switch on the Varispeed knob and turn it up a little bit you'll hear that the song sounds tighter. For reference: Beatles. We can do this pretty well digitally now, too, but it's less obvious since the pitch doesn't change as it does with tape.

Hey Bill. I love your work on Dr. Dog's Fate. I am an aspiring producer/engineer just getting his feet wet in recording. I have always been curious about the mixing process. Would you be able to go over the basics of what you do when you mix a record?

Also, I have been curious as to why "From" on Fate and a few other Dr. Dog songs are slightly detuned/uptuned.

I am glad I stumbled upon this site and I am looking forward to new posts.

Thanks for your time,
Nick

I really love the sound of Rabbit Habits. Was it recorded straight to digital or was tape involved and, if so, how? Was it largely recorded live or was it mainly overdubs? I love the roominess of this album. How did you achieve this? Mainly room mics? Artificial reverb? What reverb units? What other insights can you give on the recording of this album? Thanks.

Hi Bill,
First of all thank you so much, I really love your advices.
Could you explain a little bit the way you record a bass guitar? I like a lot the vintage/LO-FI sound of Dr.Dog bass lines , but I don't Know how can I get this sound. I use to play my P-Bass with flats through my orange 2x15 cainte; but I don't know wich Microphone is better to do the recording. I got a EV-R20, a Sennheiser 421, and an avalon U5 DI, so I get a mix of the D with one of the mics.
